After being on the waiting list for a couple of years, we are really excited to be taking part in Shitbox Rally 2020 Autumn!! This year, all the teams are driving their shitboxes from Alice Springs to Gold Coast via the Gulf of Carpentaria (yikes!).
Shitbox Rally is the largest community lead fundraiser for the Cancer Council in Australia and is now in its 11th year. Part of the participation is that all teams have to raise a minimum of $5,000 but most teams raise well above this amount.
These funds go to the Cancer Council and we are extremely proud to be doing our part. The fundraising is the hard part, so any donation you can give is greatly appreciated. Please make sure to follow our progress via this page and the blog post below.
Shitbox Rally is the adventure of a lifetime challenging participants and their cars, worth no more than $1,000, on a 7 day drive across Australia to raise money for cancer research.
The rally is not a race – it’s a fun, colourful, unpredictable adventure with participants travelling at their own pace in smaller groups. Vehicles often break down but “we never leave anyone behind” and each night is spent camping beneath the stars and celebrating the day’s achievements. It all adds up to an incredible opportunity to see Australia’s vast and beautiful countryside and make lifelong friends, many brought together after experiencing cancer themselves or seeing cancer impact family and friends.
Since it’s inception the rally has been the largest fundraiser for the Cancer Council nationally.
Woo Hoo! We've now got our sweet, sweet shitbox chariot purchased with plenty of time to fix the myriad of issues with it before the rally.
It's a lovely 99 model Golf with only 180k on it. Apart from being at least a couple of years overdue for a service, it's got the following issues:
-front drivers side door doesn't open
-leaking sunroof (most likely - got to love a damp, musty car!)
-missing oil filler cap
-coolant temperature sensor has issues
-faulty power window switches
-plenty of dents/scrapes/peeling paint/missing trim pieces/questionable upholstery etc as you would expect in a sub $1k car
Managed to sort out a couple of the issues already but this car is definitely going to keep us busy in the coming weeks and months ahead of the rally!
It's been a productive few weeks for our shitbox! We've repaired the leaking sunroof, she doesnt smell quite so bad now.
Some electrical issues have been fixed too. But then we had an issue with with the windscreen washers not working... Bunnings DIY job and it's all working, for now 😂 the hoses were old, cracked and failing but hopefully this solution holds up!
Last week she passed her rego check after initially failing (!!)... phew!!
Good news everyone! Although we are disappointed the rally can't go ahead as planned this year, due to the COVID-19 outbreak, we have just heard it is being postponed instead to next year, so all donations and sponsors can roll across to then.
We are so grateful for everyone's generous donations so far, and can't wait to share the journey with you when it rolls around.
Shannon and Steph 😁
